Cable Shifter Bushing Repair Kit (Black)

 [SS-CSBUSH2]
 $25.00

Description

Cable Shifter Bushing Repair Kit (Black)

Cable shifters came stock on 89 through early 91 5-speed SHOs.  One wear item on a cable shifter is the cable shifter bushing.  There are two bushings that wear out.  This is the replacement for the black bushing at the shifter in the car.  Over time the cable shifter bushing will fall apart and the shifting will get VERY loose and sloppy pushing forward or backward on the shift lever (enough you may not be able to get the car fully in gear.  The black center bushing will split and fall apart.

New Ford cable shifter bushings are not available, so we built our own.

Tech Notes

Print the installation instructions: Here  Make sure you install the new end in the same location and rotation as the old end.

Applications

1989-1991 Taurus SHO with 5 speed MTX transmission using a cable shifter

This worked great., the instructions were pretty well done, and I didn't have any problems. I suggest taking the extra time to completely remove the center console, (5 bolts) and pull the clip oit that holds the cable to the mount on the floor board to make it a little easier to get ahols of and make it easier to measure and install. I used a small hand held battery powered saw with a fine tooth motel blade and zipped the sides off of the old plastic bracket. Two quick passes with the saw on both sides of the cable, and I just pulled what was left of the old plastic part with players and it popped right off! I drove the car for a couple days without the console just to make sure I had everything right, then put the console back in today...

Good permanent fix for a broken bushing! However, not an easy fix as you know nothing is easy. The best thing to do is take the 4 bolts out and pull the shift lever up. Press the part on the ball of the shift lever with a pair of channel locks or pliers, it will snap on. Then put the little wire on. Now, put the shift lever back in and slide the bushing on the little rod, mine went ALL the way on. tighten the allen screw, put the 4 bolts back on the shift lever and you are done. Its a bear getting that plastic end off because there is no room to work but may be easier if you take the shift lever up( all the linkage stays on just pull the lever up and out of the hole)...

I managed to break both sides of my shifter: the black oval bushing and the white one on the transmission. The repair kit was easy to use and looks to be a vast improvement over the crappy clip and bushing setup Ford used...
